About Tenants ACT

Tenants ACT publishes plain-English guides to renting in Canberra and the rest of the ACT, written for tenants, housemates and people renting a room.

What this site is

An independent, free information site. Each guide answers a common renting question under ACT law: the Residential Tenancies Act 1997, its standard tenancy terms and the rules the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal (ACAT) applies.

What it isn't

  • It isn't a government website or connected to the ACT Government.
  • It isn't a law firm or a legal service, and it can't advise you on your own situation.
  • It isn't the Tenants' Union ACT, and it isn't connected with it. The Tenants' Union's website used this address until 2024. Tenants ACT is a new, unrelated site, and none of its guides are copied from the Tenants' Union's material.
  • It isn't Legal Aid ACT or its Tenancy Advice Service, which has run the ACT's government-funded tenancy advice service since April 2020.

If you need advice about your own tenancy, see free tenancy advice in the ACT.

How guides are written and checked

  • Guides are written from the legislation and the ACT Government's and ACAT's own published guidance.
  • Every guide lists its sources and shows the date its content was last checked against them.
  • Where the law has changed recently, the guide says when the change started.
  • Guides cover the ACT only. Renting law is different in New South Wales and every other state.

Advertising and links

Tenants ACT carries no advertising or sponsored content, and it doesn't ask for your details. See the privacy page for the analytics the site uses.

Some guides link to Carpenter Canberra, a carpentry website run by the same people who publish Tenants ACT.

Corrections

Guides are rechecked when the law changes. When a correction is made, the guide's checked date is updated.
